Starting a New
Sons of The American Legion Squadron
Would you like to start a squadron in your area?
Sons of The American Legion Squadrons align with American Legion posts in local areas. If your local American Legion post does not have an associated S.A.L. squadron, you can absolutely start one!
A Legion post should have an SAL squadron to support the post’s mission by providing additional manpower and a dedicated volunteer base to help with its programs and activities. The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) squadron strengthens the four pillars of The American Legion—Americanism, Children & Youth, National Security, and Americanism—by assisting with veterans’ welfare, youth programs, and community service projects. Having an SAL squadron also fosters a stronger “Legion family” by involving more members, including descendants of veterans, in its purpose.
How an SAL squadron strengthens a Legion Post
Provides extra support:
The SAL offers additional hands and a dedicated membership base to help with the post’s various programs and activities, such as fundraising, honor guard duties, and community events.Supports the four pillars:
The squadron’s activities directly align with and support The American Legion’s core mission. This includes improving the quality of life for children, caring for veterans and their families, and teaching good citizenship.
Helps with youth programs:
Squadrons actively promote Americanism and help teach children about patriotism, citizenship, and leadership. They also support programs that benefit the youth in the community.
Assists veterans:
SAL members volunteer their time at veterans’ hospitals and homes and provide support for veterans and their families.
Fosters a broader community:
As a program within The American Legion, the SAL provides a way to involve the male descendants of veterans in the organization’s goals and mission, creating a more unified “Legion family”.
